Principle of cryolipolysis

Cryolipolysis relies on the fragility of fat cells when they are subjected to intense cold: the fatty acids contained in the adipocytes crystallize, the cell wall ruptures and the fats eventually escape to be completely resorbed in a few weeks. This cell death by degeneration is called apoptosis. It is a perfectly known cellular mechanism, at the basis of the concept of CoolSculpting®.

History of CoolSculpting®

By studying the cellular mechanisms of cryolipolysis, two renowned researchers from the prestigious MGH in Boston had the idea of finding an application in aesthetic medicine, as an alternative to liposuction or surgical lipectomy.

After more than 10 years of work on a medical device using cryolipolysis to lose weight, CoolSculpting® was developed by the company Zeltiq Aesthetics.
